Find a girl who sings. You’ll know that she does because she will always hum while waiting for you. She’s the one lovingly tapping her feet to the ground when she listens to the song she loves. You see the lovely lady smiling holding the music player walking around in the music store? That’s the singer. They can never resist singing the songs on their music player, especially when they have great lyrics.
She’s the girl singing while walking to the hall before that general lecture. If you peek on her iPod screen, the battery is running low because she’s kind of engrossed in the rhythm already. Lost in a world of the musician’s making. Walk by. She might give you a glare, as most girls who sing do not like to be interrupted. Ask her if she likes the song.
Walk together to the main building.
Let her know what you really think of John Mayer. See if she got through the songs of Full Moon Fever with Free Falling.Understand that if he says she completely understood the meaning of her songs, he’s saying that to sound intelligent. Ask her if she loves Jason Mraz or if she would like to be Jason.
It’s easy to date a girl who sings. Give her a world of music for her birthday, for Christmas and for anniversaries. Give her the gift of rythms, in songs or played tunes. Give her The Script, Maroon 5, or One Republic. Let her know that you understand that tones are love. Understand that she knows the difference between songs and reality but by God, she’s going to try to make her life a little like her favorite song. It will never be your fault if she does.
She has to give it a shot somehow.
Sing wrong pitch to her. If she understands rhythm, she will understand you need to do it. Behind tones are other things: lyrics, meanings, soul. It will not be the end of the world.
Fail her. Because a girl who sings knows that failure always leads up to the chorus. Because girls who sing understand that all things will come to an end. That you can always create another verse. That you can begin again and again and still be the master of song. That life is meant to have a wrong pitch or two.
Why be frightened of everything that you are not? Girls who sing understand that people, like pre-chorus, develop. Except in jazz songs.
If you find a girl who sings, keep her close. When you find her up at 2 AM singing a song on her ipod and weeping, make her a cup of tea and hold her. You may lose her for a couple of hours but she will always come back to you. She’ll talk as if the lyrics in the song are real, because for a while, they always are.
She will wait to be proposed to at one of her performances. Or during a concert. Or very casually next time she’s happy.
You will smile so hard you will wonder why your heart hasn’t burst and bled out all over your chest yet. You will write the songs of your lives, have kids with beautiful names and even beautiful tastes. She will introduce your children to the classic kid songs, maybe in the same day. You will walk the winters of your old age together and she will sing Bruno Mars under her breath while you dust the snow off her shoulders.
Date a girl who sings because you deserve it. You deserve a girl who can give you the most colorful life imaginable and entertain you for hours. If you can only give her monotony, and stale hours and half-baked proposals, then you’re better off alone. If you want the world and the worlds beyond it, date a girl who sings.
Or better yet, date a girl who creates music.
